An Unexpected New Dream

In “An Unexpected New Dream,” we meet young Eunice Waymond, a little Black girl with a huge dream- to become the “First Black Concert Pianist.”

We grow with our shero, as she develops into Dr. Nina Simone, a tour de force of the Civil Rights movement, embraced the world over for her musical genius.

Tunu wrote this book to highlight a few important ideas…

  • Discipline and dedication are jewels on the crown of artistry.

  • A young person's voice aligned with truth holds authority.

  • Cultivating yourself takes time, and your contributions can be quite unexpected.

  • It’s time to shine a light on the unnecessary pain, prejudice and division that racism in the United States of America has caused.

REVIEWS of AN UNEXPECTED NEW DREAM by Tunu Thom

My five year old loves this book. We use the glossary as a guide for some really tough conversations. There’s so much I didn’t know about Nina Simone. Thank you for this book. We really enjoy it.

I like when it shows how much she practiced when she was a little girl and when she stood up for herself. Also the pictures are really pretty.

-J. Moreno (age7), Bronx, New York

A timely read. I got this book for my niece and nephew. After we read it we had a great conversation about their goals and dreams. I haven’t gotten to spend much time with them so this book was a really sweet way for us to enjoy one another. Also, I was able to introduce them to one of my favorite artist.

You can’t help it. An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.”
